How to check an agent's complaints scheme and money protection

Updated October 2026 · Based on fee pages from 200 branches · How we check

By law, letting agents in England must belong to a government approved redress scheme and hold client money protection (CMP) if they handle rent or deposits. Agents must also display their fees and these memberships on their website.

The redress schemes

Both have a search on their website where you can check an agent's membership.

Client money protection

CMP schemes include Propertymark, Client Money Protect, Safeagent and Money Shield. The agent should show a current certificate.

What we show

On each agent's page we show the scheme when we found it named on the fee page we checked. Where we didn't spot it, we link here so you can check the scheme's own register. That says nothing about whether the agent is a member, so always check the register before you sign.

Fees change. Always check the agent's own fee page before you sign.
